ClearView Names New Underwriting Head Amidst Strategic Changes?w=400
ASX-listed life insurer ClearView has announced the appointment of Peter Tilocca as Head of Underwriting, coinciding with key updates to its underwriting standards and definitions.
Tilocca's extensive two-decade career in Australian underwriting includes leadership roles at Zurich, Noble Oak, One Path Life, and RGA Australia.
His new role with ClearView commenced on 30 June.

With Tilocca at the helm, ClearView aims to strengthen its underwriting processes and foster both new and existing strategic partnerships. The insurer has recently rolled out modifications to its medical underwriting framework, aiming for enhanced clarity and uniformity for advisers and policyholders seeking life insurance coverage. These revisions, in effect since May, promise significant improvements:

  • Improved Accessibility: Clients pursuing cover under set thresholds—up to $2 million for Life and Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) in select age groups—can experience reduced or eliminated mandatory medical prerequisites, simplifying the application process.
  • Structured Tiering System: The refreshed requirements for Life, TPD, Trauma, Income Protection, and Business Expenses are now tiered by age and benefit amount. This change aids advisers in easily determining necessary medical documentation and managing client expectations efficiently.
  • Trauma Cover Alignment: For elevated trauma cover levels, ClearView aligns its underwriting with the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program for applicants aged 50 and above, integrating health outcomes with policy offerings.

Additionally, ClearView has refined its trauma definitions and benefits within its ClearChoice and LifeSolutions product lines. Effective from 5 June, these improvements are designed to enhance clarity and fairness, keeping pace with modern medical standards:

  • Cancer Definition Revision: The exclusion for colorectal neuroendocrine carcinomas under ClearChoice policies has been lifted, offering greater coverage options.
  • Expanded Angioplasty Coverage: Requirements for coronary artery angioplasty have broadened to cover procedures on any three or more coronary arteries, enhancing accessibility for various clinical scenarios.
  • Major Head Trauma Definition: A novel assessment path introduces a Whole Person Impairment (WPI) measure of at least 25% as an alternative to traditional 'Activities of Daily Living' criteria for claims assessment.

ClearView's modifications reflect a strategic effort to maintain relevance in a rapidly evolving insurance landscape. By aligning their offerings more closely with national health initiatives and medical advancements, ClearView not only positions itself for growth but also enhances its promise of clarity and fairness for clients and advisers.

Looking to the future, these updates could streamline insurance processes, potentially encouraging more Australians to invest in comprehensive coverage. Industry experts might anticipate further advancements and realignments as ClearView continues to adapt to emerging trends and consumer needs.
